COCOON 2017 bronze 50x20x22

I created cocoon as part of a global project, Fly Beyond Tel Aviv by Grey Goose. I was chosen as a presenter, for breaking the boundaries in the field of art. I had to create an imaginative sculpture for a documentary project and present it at the Tel Aviv Museum. I hit a creative block, while sculpting, where I was unable to find a solution for the flight and the wings, as I did not feel I was flying. I stood at the edge, just before the flight, still folded, afraid to soar. I tried to create wings in all kinds of shapes, constructing, but mostly destroying them. The image reminded me of the movie “Birdy”, about a man in a mental institution, sitting on the edge of his bed in this position, looking out of the window and dreaming he was as free as a bird. After hours of staring and frustration, it came to me…. The moment of realization, where I felt my wings. I burst into tears of liberation. I felt that it was really me. The story of the cocoon and the monk: A monk gave a boy a cocoon and asked him to watch the process without interfering. The butterfly started to emerge from a small hole and struggled for hours. The boy couldn`t take it, and cut the hole a little bit. The butterfly managed to get out, but soon died. The sad boy returned to the monk and asked him what had happened. The monk explained to him, that the butterfly`s struggle to get out of the little hole, is what builds his muscles and his wings and when the are strong enough, he breaks through and spreads them. These are growing pains. This was exactly the phase for me, my wings, not yet fully developed, still folded. At the right time when I`m strong, I will fly. This particular emotion, of fear before flight, I expressed with honesty, to myself and to the world. I am just a newly hatched little butterfly. Cocoon represented me with great respect.

COCOON
Fly Beyond Tel Aviv by Grey Goose
